Around here it’s starting to get hot outside, which has me dreaming of a cool retreat inside. Do you like to change out your home décor when the seasons change? I love the changing seasons and I love to celebrate each season by changing up my inside décor. Here are simple ways to welcome summer indoors and make it feel a notch cooler inside, too.
- Display seashells, sand or beach glass in jars or bowls.
- Roll up heavy rugs and let your floors go bare.
- Remove just a few of the items you have out on display to create white space for your eye. An uncluttered room feels cooler and allows air to move freely throughout your space.
- Display memorabilia from a prior summer vacations or place vacation scrapbooks in a bowl or basket for easy reminiscing.
- Replace heavy bed linens or throws with lighter ones.
- Cover dark or heavy sofas with white, cotton slipcovers.
- Replace formal candles sticks with lanterns to create a casual look reminiscent of summers spent camping.
- Change out throw pillows to add pops of bright, summer-time colors.
- Clean out the fire place and put potted plants or candles on display inside.
- Cut fresh flowers from the garden, or pick up a bunch from the market.
What do you do to decorate for summer inside your home? Thanks for sharing your ideas!
I really don’t decorate differently for summer, unless you count wet towels, footprints, and all the smiling faces that decorate our house this time of year. 🙂
Normally, I don’t change anything, but this summer I’ve been thinking about changing out the rug and pillows to brighten up the den. Probably because I’m not working, and I have more time on my hands.
Hi, Melanie,
I think what you wrote counts—that’s the true essence of summer, isn’t it?
Hi, Sallie,
Changing the rug and pillow sounds fun. The things I do are really simple and take very little time…but I always like looking at something different.
Thanks for your comments!

I don’t typically change our decor much at all for the change of seasons, but I think it is a great idea Aby and something I will think about for future season changes. As it is winter here now, I do put out a lot more candles, and have a jar of marshmellows on the kitchen counter for hot chocolates drinks 🙂
Hi, Shari,
I love, love the idea of a jar of marshmallows for hot chocolate drinks! Will have to tuck that one away for winter. It was in the 90s today…but I found some hot chocolate mugs at a garage sale today…so oddly enough I was thinking about hot chocolate today. 🙂

Have to come back later when I have time to read your posts. Haven’t been here in a while. Lots of inspiration photos and ideas. Thank you for sharing them with us. “See” you later. 🙂
Apparently I associate scents very strongly with the seasons. I just found myself switching things to my summer scents. Away went the cinnamon candle, replaced by lilac. Away went the mint soap, replaced with Island Margarita.
Love your ideas! Just last week, I changed my bedding and curtains to lighter summer time valances and quilts. Thank you.
This is such a great article on decorating your home for the summer! The pictures you chose are great examples of simple and easy changes that really create that summertime feeling. I love the idea of cleaning out your fireplace and adding some potted plants or candles! I also love the idea of adding some fresh cut flowers. This is a great idea for summer and will truly brighten up any room! Thanks for sharing!
