…what would happen if you put a non-microwave safe bowl in the microwave to cook a single potato?
Wonder no more:
This once again demonstrates the dangers of multi-tasking in the kitchen. No ceramic bowl is safe if I try to simultaneously 1) cut things with a sharp knife, 2) carry on a conversation with my daughter, and 3) select appropriate dishes for microwave cooking.
If you’re a ceramic bowl, consider yourself warned. If you’re a successful kitchen multi-tasker, can you please share your secret(s)?
I HAVE always wondered that!!!
Been there-done that-just a good excuse to go to Target and buy a new CUTE bowl!!!!! They’ve got some great spring colored ones.
SOLUTION: hire a chef, hire a babysitter and hire a housekeeper. now wake up b/c i’m dreaming!!! sounds so good in a blog though!
I’m not gonna lie to you, I think the “antiqued” look is gorgeous. Use the bowl as decorative storage somewhere, and go buy some Pyrex bowls!
I agree with the comments above…the bowl looks like it is supposed to be that way! 🙂
Pampered Chef makes a great microwaveable container with a vented lid that you can microwave practically anything.
Hi Aby,
I just received my Pottery Barn desk and I love it! Just wondering if you added the acrylic desk protector as well and if you did, if you like it?
thanks!
Rosa
I like the hire a chef, babysitter, housekeeper idea !! 🙂
Everything I put in the microwave is either corelle, pyrex or corningware.
Sorry about your bowl!
I think it looks Shabby Chic and cute. I didn’t realize it was an accident until I stopped to *read. Put some moss in it and call it good. 🙂
Give the kid something to do. Scrubbing something in the sink…stirring something in a bowl…just not the cutting with a sharp knife. And wrap the potato in a damp paper towel. Never wonder which bowl to use again! Or, I usually keep a micro-safe dish in the microwave, to remind me (or to use) when i open the door.
I think the bowl looks cool — has an antiqued look to it.
I think the cracked patina is rather cute. Why not put all the bowls in the microwave and have a matching set??
pampered chef batter bowl?
Watch out for newer pyrex—it’s not made as well as older pyrex and “shock” shatters more easily.
Good luck w/the multitasking. Maybe a trip to target IS in order…
Smiles,
Dianne
I agree that I like the look of the bowl. However, for future use, (in case you don’t get so lucky with a cool-looking turnout), how about a cabinet above the microwave strictly for microwavable dishes? You will appreciate the separation when your kids become little chefs, too.
I *love* how the bowl looks. I would definitely keep it and put it to use some other place in my house! Sometimes accidents are suppose to happen. 😉
sorry about your bowl! that makes me sad. on another note, my post today was all about microwaving potatoes, check it out and save your bowls:

The secret to multi-tasking in the kitchen for me is: if it’s not microwave and dishwasher safe, I don’t own it.
I’m with the person who said if it’s not micro or dishwasher safe I don’t own it. I finally brought hubby around to my thinking. He was constantly asking me if he could put something in the dishwasher. (duh)
He finally got so many of the insulated coffee cups that he dishwashers them anyway. . . unfortunatly they came out unscathed.
I cook by putting something on the stove or in tghe oven and returning to the kitchen when the smoke alarm goes off. Someone (not me) put the kids’ hand painted plates & cups in the dishwasher. The result was not as attractive as your bowl! Gives new meaning to “a clean slate.” IF I can find some more of that paint (that came in the box with the dishes), we’ll do them over.
oh…is THAT what happened to one of my dishes??? that could possibly explain it. I had a ceramic dish and noticed some “spidering” on the inside, though they didn’t appear to be actual cracks. This might explain it. THANKS!
