The Weather Calls for…HEAT! And frankly, I’m a bit tired of it. Just before I took this photo, the thermometer read 104 degrees. ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR DEGREES! Are you kidding me? Yuck.
So, what better to do but organize (or write about it,) right?
Here’s a simple project I did last week. Took about 15 minutes and used some left over supplies from my scrapbook room project. We’ve stored my daughter’s hair stuff in a cabinet drawer by our kitchen table for a number of years…since that’s the room where invariably we comb her hair. Before this latest reorg, her stuff was stowed in a few make-up bags, you know one of those freebie-gift-with-purchase deals. Other hair stuff was just loose in the drawer. Honestly, it worked fine. It just didn’t look very neat and tidy. So I ran down stairs to my space, found these four extra bowls, dumped out the drawer and sorted away (while sipping wine and chatting with my hubby.) Poof! Minutes later, order had been created in hair care central. Total cost: $0.
Now…if you don’t have any hair care woes in your midst, what good is this little blog post going to do you? Well…here’s the message, go on a scavenger hunt in your home for containers that you can use to organize and corral some of the little messy stuff in one of your drawers. Ramekins work nicely, and truly, do we have the time to measure our stuff into ramekins before pouring into the bowls like they do on the cooking shows? Not I. So let’s put those little ramekins to a higher purpose: organizing! You could also use some spare glass votives or even small jelly jars to corral small things like paper clips, rubber bands, extra staples, loose pocket change, and so on. So go forth and conquer your pony tail holders! Bring order to your office supplies! Organize anything and everything! Just stay out of that heat. 😉
i have to say…it’s quite hot INSIDE your place as well ???
we’ve been having some scorchers here in ATL too…my solution is to stay IN!
Oh how I long for the days of 104 degree weather! It was 114 today!! 114! Talk about yuck! With the monsoon season, that also bring about that muggy humidity that drives my curly hair into a tizzy frizzy! But I am definitely ready for cooler weather it is even way too hot at 8am for the kids to walk to school and that just isn’t fun at all. (Of course, I will singing the praises of a 70 degree day in December!)
just what I needed – motivation to organize my girls hair stuff. Thanks! BTW I say in BHG this month a very cute idea, they took a 3 tier wire basket and sat it on the counter to hold ribbon (in the sewing room) wouldn’t that be cute in a little girls bathroom filled with bows, ribbons and clips! Thought you might like the idea
Isn’t the heat/humidity awful?! Gotta love August in MO. Cute simple idea- luckily hair bows and such are one thing that we don’t have laying around everywhere. (I have 2 boys). But we have plenty of other stuff in need of organization! By the way, hi! I’ve been popping in, lurking and enjoying your blog for awhile now and just realized that I’ve probably never left a comment. Sorry about that!
I bought a $3 or $4 plastic fishing tackle box and put most of our hair stuff in there. Of course, it all wouldn’t fit, so the ribbons are in a wipe container and the “bow” barrettes hang on a ribbon from a hook on the closet door where all the hair accessories are stored. It’s easy to find the right color and style we’re looking for 🙂 Not as good as $0, but close!
Oooo – how have I not stumbled across your blog before?! I LOVE LOVE LOVE organizing and you are so full of great tips! I would love to put a link to your site on mine, but I always try to tell people when I do. If you would like me to remove it, please let me know.
very cool. I have been trying to do one of these types of jobs every few days.
My life with four kids needs some serious overhauling.
I rarely post a comment but this “hair” thing is something I have sweated over for years. We too, fix our hair downstairs instead of in the kids’ bathroom and therefore store our stuff in the guest powder room vanity. I did something similar to you only using a glass baby food jar for each color (no lids). Until….I came across something that won’t constantly “spill” over, messing up all my organizational neatness. I now use those really inexpensive (1.99 @ Hobby Lobby) plastic embroidery floss containers. They have numerous little cubbies so I can color sort, are just the right size for the variety of hair accessories we have and best of all, have a lid that snaps down, keeping each category neatly in its place. We keep one for ponytail holders and one for barrettes. Large bows are clipped on 1″ grossgrain ribbon strips I sewed on to “D” hooks and hung from hooks on the back of the girls’ closet doors. We just grap an outfit, bow and head to the powder room to pick out a coordinating ponytail holder or barrette.
