Jennifer’s Story
For me, summer presents a rare opportunity. It’s the one time of the year when I have time and space to dream and gain clarity about my life. In the hustle and bustle of the school year, in the midst of balancing family, work, volunteer, and other obligations, it can be difficult to truly reflect on life and how things are going for me. But in summer… ah, summer…this is when I find a bit of breathing room. And what comes from that can be pretty incredible. In fact, taking advantage of this breathing room is how I came to work at simplify 101!
This story is a great illustration of how giving yourself the time and space to get clear about what you want can make magical things happens. Aby is also going to chime in with her side of the story, too. So get ready…this always gives me goosebumps!
In July of 2011, I was on vacation with my family, which involved several hours of driving. While I do not consider myself a road trip person, I definitely enjoy having the chance to get into deep conversations with my husband. As we drove through Indiana that summer, we had a few discussions about our careers. I gained a lot of clarity about what was and was not working so well in my job at that time, some of which I hadn’t been able to really identify until then. My super-smart husband asked me some great questions that helped me define my ideal work situation. I wanted a job that would allow me to:
- Continue working close to home/near the girls’ schools
- Continue working part-time
- Continue working in a flexible environment that allowed me to attend occasional field trips or be home with a sick child
- Write more
- Get more involved with social media
- Grow and learn in my field of marketing communications
At the end of the list, we had a nice laugh about how that was total “pie in the sky.” I commented that a job that offered all of this just didn’t exist. And oddly enough, our conversation helped me recognize that my current job was closer to ideal than I had been acknowledging, and that in turn helped me feel more grateful than I had been feeling.
So imagine my surprise when I received an email from a friend just a day or two later (while still on vacation) that started with, “Hey, there! I’m not sure you are even interested in a job change right now, but this is perfect for you…” In my in-box was a job description from simplify 101. If I had written a job description based on my discussion in the car, this would have been it. It fit me to a T! Sounds too good to be true, right? But it gets crazier. Two days later, I had a second friend approach me about the very same position. I knew I had to pursue it.
I contacted Aby about the job, which resulted in a phone interview and shortly thereafter, an in-person interview with Jay and Aby. This still amazes me to the point that I had to look back at my calendar to be sure I was remembering correctly…but here’s the deal: Less than two weeks after I got very clear on my ideal job, I had been offered and accepted the job with simplify 101, a job that met every single one of my dream job requirements.
I feel like I should put up a disclaimer at this point, something like, “Results may not be typical. Expect to achieve goals and dreams at your own pace.” Obviously not everything we go after in life comes to fruition this way! I continue to be truly surprised by how quickly things fell into place, and how well they have worked out since then. But whether or not the opportunity had unfolded that week, month, year, or beyond, when the opportunity presented itself I was ready to act on it and accept it. All of this was possible because I had become clear on what I wanted. I recognized the job as an excellent fit because I had taken the time to dream about a better life.
Aby’s Turn
At the same time Jennifer and her husband were discussing her dream job, Jay and I were putting the finishing touches on a list of qualifications for our dream employee. When we were done, we looked at each other and laughed thinking there couldn’t possibly be someone with all of those qualifications in our small town.
But I plunged forward with the plan anyway, emailing our job description to my local friends, asking if they knew anyone who might be a good fit. When we met with Jennifer a few days later, we literally laughed in amazement as we worked our way down the list of job duties, qualifications and skills: Jennifer got a check mark next to 22 of 23 bullet points. It doesn’t get much better than that!
The Takeaway
If you’ve been itching for something better or different in your life, I invite you to give yourself the space and time you need to become clear. What do you want? Even if it feels completely out of reach or impossible…give yourself permission to explore what you want and let yourself want it.
If you’d like guidance and encouragement on your journey, I invite you to join me for the summer session of How to Achieve Your Goals and Create a Life You Love. (Update: This class is now available as a self-paced online class.) And whether you decide to join me, or go it alone, promise me that you will carve out some time for yourself this summer…to dream about your better life. Deal?
Your Turn
What’s your dream? Once you decide, or if you already know, please share your dream in the comments. I’d love to congratulate you on taking that all-important first step in making your dream life happen!
Happy dreaming,
Jennifer and Aby
I have often thought about my dream job, and how i can go about creating it. I still haven’t fully worked it out, I guess I haven’t allowed myself to just go ahead and dream. Yet. Thank you for the inspiration.
Oh good. Glad you’re inspired to dream about your dream job!
I want to be a NYT bestseller for one of the series I’m planning to write, and have a book made into a good movie.
Oh Allison what a terrific goal!! Best wishes to you as you move forward and make it happen!

My dream is to finish my college education that I started in 1984 while still in high school. I am taking online classes and expect to finish by December 2015 with a degree in family history (genealogy).
That is fantastic Jenna! Congrats on your goal and your progress towards it already!!

To finally start my long arming business and stay home with my children. I would say that is my dream.
I had to Google what that is, Melissa, sounds great! How wonderful to be able to stay home with your children. Have you taken the next step in the direction of your dream?

I have been working on clarifying my dream job, so this post is very timely and is encouraging. I’m on the right path, I think, although my dream is so out there, I don’t know how it will play out. But I know I was cut out for it, otherwise I wouldn’t think it! So excited for the future! I love the opportunities every new day brings. Have a lovely day, all!
Congrats, Tamara! If you can dream it, you can do it!
I am a single mother of six and I work full time. I want to start a At-Home-Business so my daughters can be involved. I just do not know where to start. I do a lot of scrapbooking, stamping and card making. I even make albums. Help with any suggestions.
Have a great day everyone.
Have you thought of signing up as a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator? Perhaps look up http://www.stampinup.com and search for a demonstrator near you that works her business. You could go to her workshops and classes to see if that would be your style.
I’ve been a demonstrator for 11 years and love it.
My interest in this thread is how to use this semi-hobby as a business.
And to clarify my volunteer work to fit my life style.
Great goal, Dee!
Stasia’s suggestion is a great one. Or maybe an Etsy business?
Aby
Stasia, is your semi-hobby Stampin’ Up? Is it a matter of growing it into something bigger?
On New Year’s Eve, close to midnight, during my Junior year of highschool, I decided I wanted to get my degree in art, then become a flight attendant and travel the world. In my time off, I could paint as I wanted, without having to support myself with it. I did exactly that. Received my BA in Studio Art, and a year after graduating, I bought a Sunday newspaper (maybe 4x/year), looked at the Jobs section (never, to that date), and saw an ad “Do you want to travel internationally?” The open house was that Tuesday, I was hired on Thursday, and in training by Sunday. That glorious job took me all over the world, allowed me to buy a condo in Seattle (I’m from GA) at the tender age of 23, and while I rarely painted, I was set. After 9.5 years, I was abruptly furloughed. That was 17 months ago, after I’d moved to a tiny rural town in N. GA with my husband. I’m at a complete loss as to what to do next..
Oh, Anna, you do exactly what you did the first time around! You decide what you want…go for it…and make it happen. You know how to do this.
A student in my Time workshop shared this quote in the forum yesterday:
“When one door closes, another one opens, but we often look so long and regretfully at the closed door that we fail to see the one that has opened for us.”
– Alexander Graham Bell
Look at your open door and decide what is next for you. Perhaps this door closed so you can do more painting now…
Hugs,
Aby
I am on the same journey and like others the timing of this article could not be more perfect. I have two sons, work full time and married to a wonderful man that also works full time, attends law school part time and was Pastoring a church for the last 3 months. It’s needless to say that we have a busy life. In the midst of all the business I overlooked a pretty important person in my house- ME!
I found myself emotionally drained, physically tired, missing my husband, wanting some me time and desperate for a change. I packed my bags and told my husband I needed a day for me.
You are right, time to think about, “What do I want to do” is important. It has helped me to realize that I love my job. I love my family. I just need to tweak a couple of things and add me to the list of things/people to take care of.
I would love to write novels, and am trying! 64 pages done and a lot of note cards to sort out yet!
Knowing what you want – love it! I am currently doing a blog that takes 100 simple things around the home and in 100 days, trying to live with less of them at http://www.organizinglifewithless.com. You are so right that often it is about knowing what you want – that to me is the dream life – being content with what you have and being okay with having less.
I have been working on my dream for the last three years with at least 4 more to go. My dream is to become a pharmacist. For the last 10 years now I have been a certified pharmacy technician. I love the field and want more. After having my second child I decided that I needed to do something about this dream. I currently work full time and go to school part time. I’m also my daughters Girl Scout troop leader and have a position with the Girl Scouts organization. As a family we keep it all together though by working as one. We take each semester at a time and see where it leads us.
