Holiday Storage Solutions

When it’s time to “un-deck the halls” and pack up your holiday decorations for safe keeping until next year, try these handy storage solutions. Shelving: Getting your holiday decorations up on shelves will make them easier to access and keep them out of the way during the rest of the year. My favorite shelving for storage is from Lowes, similar to these. These shelving units are a snap to put together. The fact that they’re made from plastic makes them suitable for damp areas like basements. Look for units with shelves that are tall enough storage bins to fit on them two by two. (Make sure to take measurements before buying bins and / or your shelving.)

Storage bins: Since holiday storage is long term storage I recommend (and use) plastic bins with lids. Plastic storage bins can be found virtually anywhere. Select something that suits your taste and will fit on your shelves or in your storage area.

Acid-free packing materials: Acid-free packaging materials will extend the life of heirloom items and fine linens. Use these materials for special items you want to last for decades to come.

Dinnerware storage: If you have special holiday dinnerware and stemware that will be stored for the year, specialized storage can offer added protection. The Container Store sells dinnerware and stemware storage.

Ornament storage: There are a variety of storage containers made just for ornaments. I find that since my ornaments come in all different size and shapes, I am able to fit more ornaments into an undivided box than one with dividers. Do what works for you and your ornament collection.

Gift wrap organizers: Select your gift wrap organizer based on where you intend to do gift wrapping and the space available to store your wrap.
