Last weekend I started a new project—redecorating our master bedroom. One of the first steps in this project was painting the walls. Right now, as a result of this painting project, the bedroom is in quite a state of disarray. The walls are painted (hooray!) but much else in the room is torn apart. We’re changing the color of the electrical outlets…so that’s a lingering to-do. A T.V. cabinet that used to be in our bedroom is in my son’s room, waiting for me to take the time to sell it on Craig’s List. This means the books and T.V. are temporarily homeless. I need to purchase new blinds, a new bed skirt, and a host of other items to completely finish this project. (And this to-do list doesn’t even take into consideration the ever-growing to-do list in the neighboring master bathroom.)
But guess what: I’m not complaining a bit. In fact, I’m thrilled. The project is now underway and it feels good! Actually, it feels fantastic.
If you’re having trouble getting started with an organizing project on your to-do list, remember this: getting started feels good. When you start, you create momentum and an even greater desire for the finished project. Now that I’ve taken action on my master bedroom I feel good, and I’m even more excited about the finished result. Even though I’m at the very beginning of this decorating journey, the end result feels much, much closer. And that is very empowering.
So, what do you say? How about getting started on your organizing project today? It doesn’t matter if you can’t do the whole thing today. The only thing that matters is that you just get started!
Aby, Your words are descriptive and you seem to pin point my problem better than any other organizing blog girl I read. I have accomplished a few cleaning task today, but lost momentum. Whenever that happens to me (actually quite often) I come to your organizing tips for the inspiration I need.
Thanks for your examples and words of encouragement.
Connie
Thank you Connie! I’m so glad my words connect with you and inspire you. Thanks for letting me know.
Good luck with your organizing projects!

Thank you Abby you inspire me to get organized, messes don’t really bother me since I have Adult ADHD organization is not in my vocabulary but I have to admit that when people say they are coming to visit, I panic!! I day dream of having my entire home organized, I have purchased all sort of containers binders you name it, I have it all but I never know how to put into place. I start projects and can’t seem to finish any of them, so today I took advantage of your free mini Binder session because paper clutter is my biggest mess, well that and my 3 boys ages 7,9 &12. I have managed to get the house clean but the minute I turn the kids have created another mess so I just run into the “organizing with kids” class that you offer and I just purchased it! I’m so excited to learn new techniques so that I can teach my kids how to put things in their place, right now I have their scooters, skateboards big balls and a bike in my formal dinning area which is a really nice room and the entrance to my home. When I look around that room a big crystal chandelier and all those big toys don’t go well together. So wish me luck and thank you for being my biggest mentor. I need all the help I can get.
Thank you Laura! I hope you enjoy Organizing with Your Kids and that it helps you and your kiddos. Good luck!!
