I always love the year-in-review segments news programs do this time of year. So I thought I’d do my own year in review blog post listing a few of my favorite things from 2009. Ready? Let’s go!
Favorite Book
“Throw Out Fifty Things” by Gail Blanke
I loved, loved this book. And it would be a great one to read now if you have “declutter” on your list of New Year’s Resolutions. You can read my review of “Throw Out Fifty Things” here.
Favorite Book – Non-Organizing Related
“Julie and Julia” by Julie Powell
It is a very rare occasion that I read a book that isn’t in the organizing, time management or self improvement category. But I am so glad I ventured outside my norm and read this one. I was drawn to this book because it’s about a blogger (and I have a blog) and it’s about cooking (and I love to cook – though not at the level of either Julie or Julia.) I seriously found this book to be laugh-out-loud funny…a nice little escape from my real world and my typical “practical reading for knowledge” type of books.
Favorite Movie
The Blind Side
Oh, how I loved this movie. But I must also mention (in fairness to all the other movies out there) that this movie didn’t have much competition in terms of making it’s way to the top of my list. It is quite possibly the only movie I saw in a theater in 2009. But still…it was a really great movie.
Favorite Company – Non-Organizing Related
Life is Good
Jay turned our family into Life Is Good fanatics, and the more I learn about this company the more inspired I am.
Favorite New Bucket
The green, oval bucket
Every favorite things list must have a bucket on it. Right? Of course it does! So here’s mine…my favorite new bucket of 2009 is the green bucket I picked up from Target over the holidays. Hands down it’s the winner. (And yes, I wish I had gotten more.)
So how about you? What are some of your favorite things from 2009—books, movies, magazines, buckets or anything else for that matter? I’d love to hear.
Favorite organizing book: Digging Out (About taking a harm reduction approach to dealing with hoarders; something I’ve never read about before that makes a lot of sense, and quite well written)
Favorite non-organizing books, nonfiction: The Devil in the White City – a book I’m so glad someone pressed upon me, because I would not have picked it up on my own. And Columbine, by Dave Cullen.
Favorite book, fiction: Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (and the two other books in the series)
Aby – this post is great. i would love to check out the throw out 50 book… i am faced with teaching a time management class to my team later in January… and while i used to be a WHIZZ at time management and organization – being a full time work at home manager has led me to become not so time managed, and well, not so organized! HELP! any recommendations on lessons or books? i always love your ideas so thanks in advance!
Aby,
I want to order your camand central binder but can’t find it anywhere. Are you out of stock or are you no longer offering it. Please let me know. handforth@cox.net
Good thoughts! I have so much stuff, that I can hardly pick a favorite! bad bad.
They still have these buckets at my Target, and I LOVE it!! I could NOT decide on a color! LOL. I’ll have to go back to get one! I just LOVE it! 😀
And thanks for the recommendations!
My Favorite book is Nicholas Sparks new book “The Last Song” and Billie Letts new book “Made in the USA”. I am going to the book store tomarrow to purchase “Throw Out Fifty Things”.
My Favorite movie was Julie and Julia. It was the cuttiest and funniest show I have seen yet. I just might read the book.
My Favorite thing that I have purchased this year would be my tread mill. Yes you read it right. I love to walk and this fits into my schedule so well when its to late to walk or the weather is not so good.
In 2010 I want to dabble more in scrapbooking this is something new to me and I was introduced to it through Aby’s classes. I am also interested in purchasing a Kindle. Does anyone have one to give me any advice, likes, or dislikes.
@Shelley,
My favorite time management books are David Allen’s Getting Things done and Mark Forster’s Do It Tomorrow. I would highly recommend both of those.
Good luck!
Aby
@ Connie T.
I don’t own a Kindle…so I don’t have any advice for you. Does anyone else?
Aby
@Becky H,
Regarding the command central product—we’re in the process of changing this product, and will have a new offering in about 4 to 6 weeks.
Thanks!
Aby
Aby, I was on the fence about the next few books to order, but I love the way Blanke writes, and your link back to your original review of “Throw Out 50 Things” has clinched it. I’m off to order it now.
(BTW, I also loved “Julie & Julia”, but I’ll warn you to be cautious about starting Powell’s new book, “Cleaving”. I thought it lacked the frothiness and delight of J&J, but worse, too much of it made me disappointed in Powell. Plus, half the book is, literally, about butchering.)
